    Le bâtiment, de style colonial,  a été construit en 1874 pour être la banque Marchand, première banque de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Celle-ci fait faillite en 1877. En 1880, la municipalité de Nouméa achète la bâtisse afin d’y abriter provisoirement l’hôtel de ville… qui tiendra cependant son rôle jusqu’en 1975 ! Il propose aujourd'hui de belles collections et des expositions temporaires. Un beau petit jardin extérieur.
